Lockdown Soundz – Down By the Salley Gardens
We want your voice! Music Generation Cork City is looking for your videos to create a video performance of ‘Down By the Salley Gardens’.
Tying in with the ethos of the Bealtaine Festival, which celebrates the arts and creativity as we age, we hope to bring young and old together to sing the much loved ‘Salley Gardens’, as learned on many a tin whistle and committed to memory in classrooms around Ireland for over 100 years. To that end, we are asking for the young people on our programmes to reach out to their grandparents and older relatives and ask them to join them in making a little video, singing along to our backing track and to be part our latest Lockdown Soundz project – Down By the Salley Gardens. In solidarity with the group hardest by the current pandemic, we want to celebrate age and creativity and make connections through song.
We would encourage you to learn or teach the whole song in this process, but for the purposes of your video contribution we ask just for the first verse.
How does this work: You will need two devices – one to make a video of yourself singing to our backing track below (on your phone is probably best for making the video); the other device to play the backing track, like a tablet or laptop and listened to on headphones. Note – videos should be recorded individually, as social distancing is still important. The purpose of singing along to a backing track or click track is so that all of your contributions can be arranged together at the same tempo.
How to make the recording: With the two devices ready to go, simply hit play on the listening device, with your headphones on and then hit record on your phone to capture the video. The backing track has a clear vocal guide to help keep time and has a short introduction, to give you a chance to find your place in the song. All you have to do is sing along!
How to send your video: When you are happy with the recording, open the website www.wetransfer.com . Click ‘Add your Files’ and select your video from your device. In the next field, add the email firstname.lastname@example.org. In the third field write your own email address. In the last field, please write your name and who you dedicate the video to. Then click ‘Transfer’. Job done!
Please spread the word amongst your friends and family – the more the merrier and anything that encourages well-being at this time is important to us all. The deadline for video submission is Friday 12th June 2020.
