Throwing Shapes is a short documentary style film, which depicts the stories of 7 young Cork artists as they find creative ways to express themselves through Hip Hop.
We were immensely proud to present the film premiere as part of Cork Midsummer Festival 2021, with a second screening taking place at Graffiti Theatre Company as part of Culture Night 2021.
The 7 young artists featured in Throwing Shapes are central to the Kabin Studio and have spent many years creating original material for the purpose of performance. The project has evolved from an experiment in creative writing into a play and now it has become a film. Navigating self expression, dealing with loss, having the craic, making beats and throwing shapes. The film is a musical reflection on what it’s like to be young in Cork City today.
Performers/writers: Alex Brady, Ava Collins, Cian Hearn (Gatch), Katelyn O’Sullivan, Kayleigh Russel, Patrick (Ricky) Salmon Anson, Daniel Sheehan (Jester).
Directed by Rosie Barrett and filmed by Albert Hooi (recent work includes Gemma Dunleavy’s Up The Flats and Jape’s Sentinel project) and co-ordinated by GMCBeats, this piece explores Cork through a lens coloured by the experience of the year we’ve just had and the creativity that sparks in challenging circumstances.
Co-produced by GMCBeats at the Kabin Studio, Graffiti Theatre Company, Cork Midsummer Festival and Music Generation Cork City with support from Arts Council Ireland/An Chomhairle Ealaíon and Cork City Council’s Arts in Context fund.
