Music Generation Cork City (MGCC) seeks quotations for the provision of research services for two exciting projects as part of our programme funded by the inaugural RTÉ Toy Show Appeal through the Community Foundation of Ireland:
(1) Mapping Musical Inclusion in Cork City;
(2) Documenting Action Research Music Projects.
Both projects will be undertaken in partnership with MGCC music providers, schools, children, young people, and community partners.
For almost 10 years Music Generation Cork City has been providing socially inclusive music making, learning, and participation opportunities for children and young people up to 18 in Cork City’s RAPID areas. Working in partnership with local music providers – The Kabin Studio, Music Mash Up, Barrack Street Band, Cork Academy of Music, Creative Tradition, and Music in Community – in a community education approach, we generate inclusive, accessible, and transformative performance music education experiences for children at risk of exclusion from music making and learning.
Research Project 1: In 2011 we conducted an audit of school-based music provision in the city at primary and secondary level, including curriculum music and music provision for the junior and senior exam cycle with a particular focus on vocal and instrumental performance music education provision. We now seek to update our knowledge base to map the changing landscape for music making and learning in the expanded Cork City.
Research Project 2: MGCC seeks a researcher to document a series of action research projects in partnership with groups that work with children who are persistently marginalised and excluded from music making and learning, including children with autism/on the autism spectrum; children from both Traveller and Roma communities, and children and young people amongst migrant communities and in direct provision.
MGCC’s core ethos is underpinned by the use of music as a tool for social inclusion, understood in holistic terms to include all grounds for equality toward equitable inclusive music making and learning opportunities. We proactively partner with community-based music organisations to provide programmes that foster social learning experiences regardless of ability, circumstances. Tuition is delivered by committed, community-based musician educator teams with children and young people in small groups, in ensembles, and using collective approaches.
